The most common types of Dental Scrap

It’s nearly impossible to simply look at your dental scrap and be sure that is has a certain level of value to it. This is especially true when it comes to scrap that is silver in color, as silver-colored scrap can often contain varying degrees of platinum, palladium or even silver. Unsure of what you have? Then it’s worth the time to seek out a qualified and knowledgable dental scrap refinery to help determine the value in your pieces. Cora Refining has over forty years of trusted refining experience, making their scrap assessments the go-to choice for dental labs and dentists for decades.

Gold Dental Crowns

Common Types of Dental Scrap:

Full Gold Crowns, also referred to as FGCs, are made of a single piece of alloy. While FCGs are often called “gold crowns”, they typically contain several different elements; gold, platinum and palladium are noble metals, while silver, copper and tin are base metals. A full gold crown is considered to be of higher quality when it contains more noble metal content; according to the American Dental Association, that label is given to an FGC with 75% or more noble metal.

Dental Bridges are usually comprised of gold or porcelain fused metal. In some cases, bridges will include additional alloys, like palladium or nickel/chromium (base-metals).

Gold Fillings (inlays and onlays) are made with 14 or 18 kt gold if they are a cast gold filling, or pure 24 kt gold if they are gold foil. Typically, inlays and onlays include metals such as gold alloy, palladium or nickel/chromium.

In addition to the elements listed above, Cora Refining also accepts floor sweeps, carpeting, filters and casting well materials. Commonly used in dental labs, these elements can often contain a hefty return of gold or precious metals. In order to receive the highest return on your dental scrap collection, we recommend adopting our proven scrap collection procedures which will aid in increasing your profits. In addition to establishing a collection routine for your practice, the Cora Refining team recommends utilizing sink traps, floor mats and collector boxes to keep additional income from literally going down the drain.
