At Cora Refining we pride ourselves on providing our customers with an unbeatable dental refining experience. We combine the technology of today with the history and patience of the past to get the very best dental scrap metal refining process for our customers. We utilize the most efficient and technologically advanced forms of metal refining, such as X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (or XRF) as well as fire assay and gravimetric precipitation. In this blog post you will find information of what exactly x-ray fluorescence is, and how we use this technique to analyze the dental scrap you send to us for a cash return.

Technology At Its Best

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) is a highly advanced way in which we can determine the concentration of multiple elements within a single sample of dental solids. This provides our scientists with a computerized, analytical, representation of the materials within a sample in a very short amount of time.

XRF works by bombarding the sample with x-rays. The metals within the sample will emit energy, each with a characteristic wavelength for a particular element. The computer captures this information and generates a report giving a detailed breakdown of the elements found within the sample.

Through speed and technology, we are able to get you cash for your dental scrap fast! For tips on how to make the most money with Core Refining, click here. Why Is XRF So Helpful?

Analyzing Mixed Samples:

XRF is particularly helpful when analyzing solids such as Crown & Bridge, Buttons, Facings and Inlays, as well as non-dental material such as jewelry. The key to accurate readings is to start with a homogenous sample. We use multiple test sites on every sample. If there are any discrepancies in the readings, the sample is re-melted and analyzed again.

Speed:

XRF provides fast representations of the materials present in a sample, faster than fire assay and gravimetric precipitation.

Provides Computerized Analytical Results

Results from assaying done through x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy are read out by our scientists on analytical spreadsheets processed on the computer. This provides a steady method of tracking and provides accuracy in recording by eliminating human error.

Why Not Only Use XRF Then?

Although there are some definite benefits to using XRF as a dental refining technique, the technology does have its drawbacks. After extensive testing, we have decided not to use XRF for grindings because the results did not meet our standards for accuracy. Also, the process is heavily dependent on homogenous samples to provide accurate results.

While we still use fire assay and gravimetric precipitation, XRF has been an extremely helpful tool for us. Our scientists analyze each sample to determine which form of assaying should be used, and at times we use multiple methods.
